I have been informed that the naming of the Italian version
of this figure was inspired by the writings of an Italian author, Emilio
Salgari. He wrote stories of his character named Sandokan.
Even the Big Jim Sandokan costume is similar to the author's version.

Salgari and Sandokan, unfortunately it is in French and I cannot read
it. Maybe someone can translate for me? See another sample

This image below is taken from an Italian TV show based on Sandokan. Could a designer at Mattel used him for their inspiration? Looks like it to me. Thanks to Matthieu Letourneux for this image and the Salgari info.
